YULU On-Bike Dashboard

This project studies Bangalore’s EV transportation ecosystem through ecosystem and stakeholder mapping, service blueprints, and user research to uncover gaps in the rider journey. Insights from this research informed the design of a digital on-bike dashboard concept that brings essential ride information directly onto the bike, reducing app dependency while improving clarity, safety, and overall riding experience.

EV public transportation in Bengaluru is growing, but unclear systems and fragmented experiences limit adoption.
The challenge was to understand user behavior and study existing services to identify key gaps in the ecosystem.
The goal was to focus on one service area and design a solution that improves rider usability while encouraging sustainable EV adoption.

Secondary research was conducted to understand the EV transportation ecosystem and identify relevant stakeholders.
An ecosystem map grouped related entities into common themes to visualize relationships and dependencies.
This provided a holistic view of service interactions and informed system-level design decisions.

Contextual enquiry was conducted at a Yulu zone in Indiranagar through ride-based observation and interviews with 10 users (5 delivery partners and 5 casual riders).
The study revealed issues such as unsafe navigation without an on-bike dashboard, unreliable battery indicators, and difficulty predicting battery discharge.
These insights were translated into a service blueprint mapping frontstage and backstage interactions to understand system dependencies and identify design opportunities.

Search Location
A top search bar with the placeholder “Where to?” prompts users to enter a destination, while the distance from the current location is shown alongside the results for quick reference.
Pause Ride
The Pause Ride option lets users pause their ride in 10-minute intervals, reducing the cost by half while the bike is not in use. Interface buttons and text are designed to be larger, ensuring better visibility and usability during the ride.
Find Yulu Zone
Find Yulu Zones and Charging Zones are placed in the top-right corner of the screen. Tapping these opens a horizontal scroll overlay, allowing users to quickly browse and select nearby parking or charging zones.
Low Battery
When the battery falls below 10%, the bike provides an audio alert and an on-screen notification, guiding users to charge or switch the bike at a nearby parking station. This reduces range anxiety and prevents the bike from unexpectedly running out of charge during a ride.
End Ride
The End Ride option triggers a confirmation screen that displays the total fare before completing the ride. This helps prevent accidental ride termination and ensures cost transparency, allowing users to clearly confirm or cancel the action with simple, easy-to-tap controls.

The solution improves ride safety and usability while supporting smoother operations and wider adoption of EV public transportation.
